How the waste is handled
- Sheets are wetted and lowered, not thrown.
- They are double wrapped in heavy-duty polythene or sealed in asbestos waste bags and labelled.
- They are kept in a secure, lined skip or container, not left open.
- A registered waste carrier takes them to a licensed site that accepts asbestos.

Why a registered waste carrier matters
Asbestos is hazardous waste. A contractor should hold a waste carrier registration and be able to show you the number. Fly-tipped asbestos is an offence and, if it is traced to your property, can become your problem.
Questions to ask your contractor
- What is your waste carrier registration number?
- Where will the waste be taken?
- Can I have the waste paperwork afterwards?
- Is the skip or container lined and covered?
Small amounts and household waste
Birmingham City Council has offered a free household collection of a small number of wrapped, sealed bags of asbestos cement (up to six bags, once every six months at the time of writing). It is meant for small DIY amounts, not whole roofs, and the rules can change, so check the council website first.
